Spooktacular Cookies
“Gather your little monster(s) and your best ghoul-friends to create some spooky-cute cookies! The very talented cake and cookie artist, Asia Coffee, and I teamed up to create a new online cookie class.”
In October 2020, Asia Coffee, a local Indianapolis cake and cookie artist, and I partnered to create an online cookie decorating class with five of my spooky Halloween characters.
She had reached out to me on Instagram asking if I would be interested in designing some cookie characters for an online class. Making an illustration for someone to turn into a cookie was a little more challenging than I had initially thought. But, in the end, Asia made the most wonderful cookies I have ever seen!
I initially gave her a set of 9 character sketches, including a zombie, a vampire, a skeleton, a jack o’lantern, Frankenstein, a lake monster, a mummy, a witch, and a werewolf. We narrowed them down to the five characters you see on my portfolio, and I had the task of fine-tuning the characters, picking a color scheme, as well as creating bios for each of the characters. I did a good chunk of the sketching live on my Twitch channel with Procreate, and then when it came to making the cookie templates, I made them in Adobe Illustrator.
I picked a limited set of colors that created a very vibrant, Halloween color palette. I knew Asia was going to be working with royale icing, and she had some limitations for me as the designer to keep in mind.
Every illustrated character was named and given a story:
Vladmir A. Vamp [vampire]
Although a little self-conscious about appearances, avoiding mirrors and what-not, Vladimir loves basking among the beauty of others. He feels entranced by those around him, and he loves staring contests…”look into my eyessss…”
Simone B. Ones [skeleton]
Simone loves to dance, to twirl, to jig, to move to the grave-y groove. She moves so much she loses her shoes! Alas, she boogies on knowing that she will never lose dancing bones.
Warren A. Wolfe [werewolf]
Warren went for a stroll late one night to untangle his thoughts. As he walked, he happened to glance towards the sky just as the clouds parted, as if curtains, to reveal the most beautiful thing he ever laid eyes on. That night, he fell in love with a gal named Luna.
Ramses B. King [mummy]
Ramses is a busy bee, leading expeditions, building temples, and monuments, and establishing cities. But, you know, even after the greatest of feats, all he wants is a long nap.
Jack O. Lantern [pumpkin]
Oh, Jack is a trickster of course! Smiling at you with his big, glowing grin and a scheme in his big gourd of a mind.
These bios were included in a 13-page guide with step-by-step instructions, and 10 companion videos so that you can create at your own pace in the comfort and safety of your home. Guide and videos were created by Asia on top of her cookie making!
I absolutely loved working with Asia Coffee! This project was an absolute dream, and I never in my wildest dreams would say that I have illustrated cookie characters.
