Coraline – 2021 Bigger Picture Show
2020 marked the 11th Annual Bigger Picture Show, presented by Lodge Design & Marketing, benefitting the Indy Film Fest. The event got postponed to Friday, October 29, 2021, at the Schwitzer Gallery at the Circle City Industrial Complex where 90+ posters depicted each film’s locations and props.
For this year’s event, I designed and illustrated a poster for Coraline, one of my favorite stop-motion films featuring one of my favorite stories by Neil Gaiman.
In my poster, I feature the Coraline doll hanging by needle and thread in front of the portal that Coraline crawls through to get to her other life. The needle points to the Pink Palace Apartments at the bottom of the poster where everything seems to go wrong in this story. And, the scene as a whole is surrounded by a frame with corners made out of Beldam’s hands around a button eye. At the bottom of the poster, I have the phrase “Welcome Home: The Key – There is Only One.” This phrase plays on the idea of Coraline finding a key to another world that looks like hers, and seemingly better, but in the end, she realizes she has one true home.
If you look closely, you can see four patterns created with themes from different scenes throughout the movie: the other garden, Miss Spink and Miss Forcible’s apartment, Mr. Bobinsky’s jumping mice circus, and the Beldam’s (Other Mother’s) room.
The Other Garden pattern consists of:
Flowers, Praying Mantis, Seeing Stones, & Hummingbirds
Miss Spink and Miss Forcible’s Apartment pattern consists of:
Scotty Dogs, Seashells, & Candies
Mr. Bobinsky’s Jumping Mice Circus pattern consists of:
Jumping Mice, Cotton Candy, Stars, & Popcorn
The Beldam’s Room pattern consists of:
Black cat, Buttons, & Beetles
And, guess what! I hid easter eggs in my poster yet again – each of the ghost children’s eyes can be found within three of the blue-colored patterns: The Circus Mice’s Ball, The Gearshift Knob, and The Pearl Ring.
